Vehicle theft in the UK is becoming a big problem ,and the number of vehicl=
es being stolen is increasing at an alarming rate. It has recently been rep=
orted in the press that thefts have increased by as much as 25% since March=
2023! Land Rovers and Range Rovers continue to be the most stolen vehicles=
, with 1 in every 100 being stolen in 2022 according to DVLA data.
To try and help The Metropolitan Police Service provides the following guid=
ance to try and reduce the risk of theft:
1. Lock your vehicle.=C2=A0Locking your vehicle, even when filling up or pa=
rked on your drive, greatly reduces the possibility of it being targeted by=
an opportunist thief. Even if you have locked your vehicle, check you have=
n't left any windows or the sunroof open.
2. Keep the keys safe. Keep your keys safe, out of view when at home, and a=
way from your front door. It's not uncommon for car keys to be stolen from =
inside your home by thieves fishing for them with a stick and hook through =
the letterbox. Keep =E2=80=9Ckeyless entry=E2=80=9D keys in a Faraday pouch=
or box to protect against Relay Theft.
3. Be aware of carjackers.=C2=A0In traffic, drive with the doors locked and=
when queuing leave enough space in front of your vehicle to enable you to =
get out of a tight spot. If your vehicle is bumped from behind, wait to pul=
l over - somewhere safe and preferably where there are people.
4. Park responsibly.=C2=A0Avoid parking in dark and secluded areas and park=
vehicle in a well-lit and busier street. And if possible, always try to pa=
rk in illuminated and staffed car parks or those with a Park Mark safer par=
king award.
5. Watch for illegal tow trucks.=C2=A0Thieves often attempt to lift vehicle=
s from the street, literally. So, if you see a towaway crew acting suspicio=
usly - especially if their vehicle isn't branded or if they're not in unifo=
rm - then please report it immediately.
6. Fit good in-car security locks.=C2=A0Bear in mind that built-in steering=
locks aren't necessarily thief-proof. Many can be forced and broken. Fitti=
ng a Sold Secure steering wheel, gear lever or clutch pedal security device=
can give your vehicle added protection.
7. Double-check electronic locking.=C2=A0Electronic devices can be used to =
jam the electronic signal from your key fob to lock your vehicle. Always ma=
nually check your vehicle has locked before walking away.
8. Before owning, check for cloning.=C2=A0Changing the identity of a vehicl=
e, known as vehicle cloning, can be as simple as adding stolen number plate=
s. When buying a vehicle, always check the DVLA V5 document and make sure t=
he Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the vehicle is the same as on the=
document.
9. Secure your port. Many modern vehicles are fitted with engine management=
diagnostic (OBD) ports, which can unlock and start your vehicle. If your v=
ehicle has this type of port, consider fitting a lockable cover.

eft in the UK is becoming a big problem ,and the number of vehicles being s=
tolen is increasing at an alarming rate. It has recently been reported in t=
he press that thefts have increased by as much as 25% since March 2023! Lan=
d Rovers and Range Rovers continue to be the most stolen vehicles, with 1 i=
n every 100 being stolen in 2022 according to DVLA data.</p><p>To try and h=
elp The Metropolitan Police Service provides the following guidance to try =
and reduce the risk of theft:<br><br>1.<strong> Lock your vehicle.</strong>=
Locking your vehicle, even when filling up or parked on your drive, g=
reatly reduces the possibility of it being targeted by an opportunist thief=
. Even if you have locked your vehicle, check you haven't left any windows =
or the sunroof open.</p><p>2. <strong>Keep the keys safe.</strong> Keep you=
r keys safe, out of view when at home, and away from your front door. It's =
not uncommon for car keys to be stolen from inside your home by thieves fis=
hing for them with a stick and hook through the letterbox. Keep =E2=80=
=9Ckeyless entry=E2=80=9D keys in a Faraday pouch or box to protect against=
Relay Theft.</p><p>3. <strong>Be aware of carjackers.</strong> In tra=
ffic, drive with the doors locked and when queuing leave enough space in fr=
ont of your vehicle to enable you to get out of a tight spot. If your vehic=
le is bumped from behind, wait to pull over - somewhere safe and preferably=
where there are people.</p><p>4. <strong>Park responsibly. </strong>A=
void parking in dark and secluded areas and park vehicle in a well-lit and =
busier street. And if possible, always try to park in illuminated and staff=
ed car parks or those with a Park Mark safer parking award.</p><p>5. <stron=
g>Watch for illegal tow trucks.</strong> Thieves often attempt to lift=
vehicles from the street, literally. So, if you see a towaway crew acting =
suspiciously - especially if their vehicle isn't branded or if they're not =
in uniform - then please report it immediately.</p><p>6.<strong> Fit good i=
n-car security locks.</strong> Bear in mind that built-in steering loc=
ks aren't necessarily thief-proof. Many can be forced and broken. Fitting a=

give your vehicle added protection.</p><p>7. <strong>Double-check electron=
ic locking.</strong> Electronic devices can be used to jam the electro=
nic signal from your key fob to lock your vehicle. Always manually check yo=
ur vehicle has locked before walking away.</p><p>8. <strong>Before owning, =
check for cloning.</strong> Changing the identity of a vehicle, known =
as vehicle cloning, can be as simple as adding stolen number plates. When b=
uying a vehicle, always check the DVLA V5 document and make sure the Vehicl=
e Identification Number (VIN) on the vehicle is the same as on the document=
.</p><p>9. <strong>Secure your port.</strong> Many modern vehicles are fitt=
ed with engine management diagnostic (OBD) ports, which can unlock and star=
t your vehicle. If your vehicle has this type of port, consider fitting a l=
